She Was The Best Hire I Ever Made…

When I interviewed her for a change management position, she made this statement: “This is not the type of change management I do. I think if you teach me, I can do it.”

She came from the IT world with neither the specific work experience nor the degree for the position.

None of that mattered. I wanted to hire her.  What did I do?  I went to the CFO and asked for more money to hire her.  Why?  I was putting a team together quickly.  I needed people with interpersonal skills, drive, motivation, and a can-do attitude.  I could teach her the specifics.  She had everything else. I got the money.  She got the job and a nice raise.

She was a quick learner.  She laughed an infectious laugh that brought the room alive.  She was beautiful both inside and outside.  I only saw her angry once when a co-worker sprayed canned string in her long hair. When the change management work ended and we all went separate ways, she told me she would love to have that canned string sprayed back in her hair.

She had a five-year plan for her Master’s Degree and for securing a management position.  Some Marshall / NASA people were surprised that I fully supported her move to an inventory management position and out of the human resource world.  She had shared her plan with me and I wanted to do all I could to make that plan a reality.

February 5 made five years that Angela Maggart Saile left this earth for her eternal home.  There is not a day that goes by I don’t think of her and miss her.  I loved her so very much.  We talked often through her cancer journey but not enough.  I never thought she would die.

Leaders … Make the most of every moment with every person in your life.  Angie gave me a great gift that cognitively I knew but did not practice daily.  Pay full attention to those in your life.  Give them yourself and your time.
