The Day After Chemo You Could…

  1. Comb and fix your hair.
  2. Put on some makeup; at least a little tinted lip-gloss.
  3. Wear attractive clothes.
  4. Have a little pep in your step.

But what does the $6,000.00 Neulasta shot commercial want you to see?

A cancer patient walking around her home with some contraption stuck to her arm.  She moves slowly and, to me, looks disheveled.

Here is the real story… the day after chemo I felt really good.  Why?  I had been pumped with steroids and anti nausea medications the day of treatment.

I believe the Neulasta commercial does a disservice to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.  Chemo is no walk in the park but it is not (to me) the portrayal shown in the Neulasta commercial.

I have a port inserted on my right side near my clavicle (about where a swimsuit strap would be).  This allows me to have labs drawn and my chemo treatments easily completed without searching for good arm veins each treatment.  The last thing I want is something else attached to my body!  It has been invaded enough.

I decided to return to my treatment center for my Neulasta shot where I would met with a nurse who would review my condition. She would ask about my activity level, side effects, general mental and physical health.  I found that to be an important face-to-face health appointment.

To those of you following this blog just know that if cancer were to strike you or a loved one it is not as portrayed on TV.

Leaders … What “commercials” do you send to others?

Are you sending “puppies and sunshine” (opportunities, successful endeavors, great teaming) commercials?

Or are you sending doom and gloom (hiring freezes, raises frozen, promotions limited) commercials?
