“The Woman Before Me” is one of Richard’s favorite songs sung by one of his favorite artists, Trisha Yearwood. The song is from a woman to her man and how the woman before her affects their relationship.
Here are a few of the lyrics:
If there are sorrows that bring back a tear
Don’t let them keep us apart
You ought to know you’ve got nothing to fear
Here in my heart
‘Cause you and I will never be
Like the past
Whatever kind of memories
That you have
Nothin’s gonna hurt you now
Can’t you see
I already made a vow
That I can keep
I find these words so very applicable to our life today.
I cry over the woman I was before cancer and I miss much of her.
I miss the carefree, adventuresome life we once had. I asked Richard the other day at breakfast, “What would you like to do?” He replied, “Anything but this.”
This cancer journey has consumed our life. We will never be like our past.
The tears don’t keep us apart. The tears bring us closer. We do, however, have that nagging fear way back in our minds that cancer will always be a part of us.
Who is the woman before me as I look in the mirror? I hope she is kinder, less of a workaholic, and focused on what really matters.
I am eternally grateful to the vow Richard made that he keeps daily: From this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, … .
I may not be the same woman but I am one fortunate woman.
Leaders … Who are those people in your organizations that keep their promises moving forward when the work is tough?
